November 5, 2026
Hinsdale's 2026 holiday season has two calendars. Downtown, at Burlington Park and along Washington Street, the Chamber and Village list their events with no sign-up step, and Hinsdale for the Holidays is free. Away from downtown, on the Metra platform, at KLM Park and in the library's meeting room, you register ahead. Those registrations open weeks before the event and sometimes fill weeks before it, too. As of early November, all four Holiday Express trips on November 29 were already waitlist-only.
For a family planning December in Hinsdale, the deadline to track is often the day registration opens, not the event itself.
The Village of Hinsdale Parks and Recreation Department's Holiday Express runs Sunday, November 29. Families take the train from Hinsdale to the Two Brothers Roundhouse for special holiday guests, a meal and festive activities. Tickets are $55, the trip is for Hinsdale residents, and there are four trip windows: 9 a.m. to 12:40 p.m., 10 a.m. to 1:40 p.m., noon to 3:40 p.m., and 1 to 4:40 p.m. The Village notes that times can shift with the Metra schedule.
Registration opened Monday, October 5, at 10 a.m. In early November, the Village's WebTrac registration system listed every trip, from the 9 a.m. departure to the 1 p.m. one, as "Waitlist." That's eight weeks between registration opening and the train leaving, and the seats were gone well before the end of that window.
Village Parks and Recreation minutes from September 2024 describe Holiday Express as "brought back" that year. If it shows up on the 2027 calendar, expect an early-October registration date again, and that's the date to put on your calendar.
Winter Wonderland comes next on the registration calendar, and it works a little differently from last year. The 2026 event is Sunday, December 6, from 9 a.m. to noon at Katherine Legge Memorial Park, 5901 S. County Line Road. You'll find photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, a craft station, a meet-and-greet with the Frozen characters, and reindeer.
The fine print matters most for families. According to the Village's Winter Wonderland page, "All participants, including parents and children, must be preregistered." Pricing is $20 for residents and $25 for non-residents. A family of four is buying four tickets, not two. In early November, WebTrac still showed Winter Wonderland as available.
Compare that with last December. The Hinsdalean's 2025 Holiday Happenings guide listed that year's Winter Wonderland on Sunday, December 7, as the "fifth annual" event. Families signed up for time slots at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. and noon, paid $20, and were asked to bring a new toy for the Toys for Tots drive. That makes 2026 the sixth year. The same guide listed two other ticketed Santa events at the Lodge at KLM Park on December 6, 2025: Breakfast with Santa and Lunch with Santa, at $30 each. In early November, Winter Wonderland was the only KLM Park holiday event on the Village's 2026 special-events registration list.
Downtown, the schedules list no tickets or registration. The Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce runs the 60th annual Hinsdale Christmas Walk on Friday, December 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. in downtown Hinsdale and Burlington Park. The Chamber's schedule for guests starts at 5 p.m. with Santa's arrival and the tree lighting at Memorial Hall. From 5 to 7 p.m., there are visits with Santa, carousel rides, train rides and open doors at downtown businesses.
The tree lighting is in a different place this year. The Hinsdalean's 2025 guide put last year's lighting at Burlington Park at 5 p.m., followed by carousel and train rides, hot chocolate and early shopping downtown. For 2026, the Chamber lists Memorial Hall instead. Memorial Hall is in the Memorial Building at 19 E. Chicago Ave., the same building as the Village Hall offices. Burlington Park is just across Chicago Avenue at 30 E. Chicago Ave. It's a short walk, but if you usually stake out a spot early, check the new location before 5 p.m.
Burlington Park is also where Santa's Workshop runs on three dates: during the Christmas Walk on December 4 from 5 to 7 p.m., then Saturdays, December 12 and 19, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The December 12 visit falls during the Village's Hinsdale for the Holidays, a free event at Burlington Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with gingerbread cookie decorating, horse-drawn carriage rides and Santa. Last year it fell on December 13, and Santa came back on the 20th.
The Village is treating the whole stretch as a shopping season too. Its 2026 event calendar marks November 1 through December 24 as "Small Business Season." At its August 26 meeting, the Economic Development Commission heard that "the two large holiday lighted features have been reserved for this upcoming holiday season in 2026."
The Hinsdale Public Library, at 20 E. Maple St., works like KLM Park, just on a smaller scale. Its December programs need registration, and the seats are limited.
The gingerbread program filled more than a month ahead, and that's the same pattern as the train. If the gift wrap workshop is on your list, sign up on the morning of November 15.
Santa's Mailbox doesn't need registration, but it has a deadline. Per the Village's Santa's Mailbox page, letters are accepted November 30 through December 7 at the outside of Village Hall, 19 E. Chicago Ave., reached by the Maple Avenue circle drive. It's free for Hinsdale residents, and families include a parent form from that page so Santa can write back. Last year the window was December 1 through 8. This year it opens the day after Holiday Express and closes the day after Winter Wonderland.

The two walk-in Saturdays at Burlington Park, December 12 and 19, are the most flexible dates on the calendar. Neither lists a sign-up, and Santa is there both days. The other events need a plan that starts in October or November.
